NewAnnual Boiler Training for School DistrictsAdult EnrichmentInstructor: Ben Weekley This 8 hour course is designed especially for Minnesota school districts that want to meet their lawful boiler operator annual training requirements. (This training is required by law.) Minnesota Statute 326B.974 School Engineer, Subd. 2. School District Training States:A school district shall allow to occur annually at least eight hours of training related to boiler operation to a licensee described in subdivision 1. The training must be administered by a licensed first or chief class engineer during the licensee’s normal working hours. Two hours of the required training shall occur in the boiler room and must include demonstration of tasks associated with operating boilers. The tasks associated with operating boilers acceptable for the training must be from the list of approved tasks supplied by the chief boiler inspector. Lunch provided.Summer 2026 -
B.E.S.T. (formerly C.A.R.S.)Adult EnrichmentInstructor: Mary Johnson (Now offered as an all-inclusive in-person training) This in-person training will cover both the on-line portion of the B.E.S.T. training and the hands-on portion at one session. Minnesota law requires all child care providers and foster care providers that are licensed by the Department of Human Services attend and complete this training before transporting children under the age of nine. Upon completion of the training, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for the on-line portion and an In-person Evaluation form. Certification is valid for 5 years.Winter 2026 -
Defensive Driving for 55+Adult EnrichmentCars have changed and so have the traffic rules, driving conditions, and the roads you travel every day. Some drivers, age 55-plus, have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. You can expect to learn current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn adjustments to accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. This course meets the requirements for a discount from your insurance company. COURSE REQUIREMENT UPDATE: As of July 1, 2024, the 8-hour initial course for the 55 + Alive program in Minnesota has been reduced to a 4-hour course. The eight-hour course is no longer required for first-time participants. The class is held at the Laker Transition Building (1104 West River Road). Handgun Permit to Carry TrainingAdult EnrichmentInstructor: Gary Thompson This class covers the basic fundamentals of handgun use and possession, as well as gun regulations as they apply in Minnesota and other states. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an endorsed certificate, allowing you to apply for your permit with your local sheriff's department. Participants must be at least 18 years of age in order to apply for the permit. Please bring your own handgun, 30 rounds of ammunition, and protective and ear wear to the outdoor range qualification shoot immediately following the classroom training. Your fee includes range fees, one-on-one coaching, information packet, certificate of completion, quick reference wallet card, and a target. Guns are available to rent for an additional $30 fee. Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AEDAdult EnrichmentInstructor: Mary JohnsonHeartsaver courses are intended for individuals who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements. This includes teachers, fitness trainers, corporate workers, restaurant employees, coaches, parents, and anyone who wants to learn how to do CPR and give first aid. The Heartsaver CPR AED course is hands-on and covers adult, child, and infant CPR, and use of the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Included in the course is relief of choking. Heartsaver First Aid provides first responders with training in basic first aid procedures, including the first aid skills recommended by OSHA. This course covers first aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, and environmental emergencies and is for non-healthcare professionals. This class will only include adult CPR/AED plus First Aid. Pediatric FA/CPR/AEDAdult EnrichmentInstructor: Mary Johnson The Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course meets the training needs of child care providers in almost all U.S. states and meets the Minnesota Department of Human Services Rule 3 requirement while also being a comprehensive resource for parents, grandparents, teachers, babysitters, or anyone responsible for the safety of children. Combining classroom and hands-on skill components, child care providers and parents learn critical first aid skills, ranging from how to create a safe environment to prevent injuries to lifesaving CPR. Course content also includes illnesses and injuries, bleeding and bandaging, allergic reactions, how to use an epinephrine pen, asthma, bites and stings, and burns. This class does not include adult CPR/AED.Winter 2026 -
