Some drivers, age 55-plus, have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. You can expect to learn current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn adjustments to accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. This course meets the requirements for a discount from your insurance company. COURSE REQUIREMENT UPDATE: As of July 1, 2024, the 8-hour initial course for the 55 + Alive program in Minnesota has been reduced to a 4-hour course. In this class, we will tie nymphs, dry flies, and streamers. In addition, we will introduce students to fly tying tools, and materials. No experience is necessary to join us for our beginner class and our goal is for you to leave the class with the knowledge and experience required to tie basic fly patterns. The class will be 4 nights and each class will last approx. 1.5-2 hours. All materials, vises, and tools will be provided. If you have your own vise and tools, please bring them to the class. Handgun Permit to Carry TrainingAdult EnrichmentInstructor: Gary Thompson This class covers the basic fundamentals of handgun use and possession, as well as gun regulations as they apply in Minnesota and other states. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an endorsed certificate, allowing you to apply for your permit with your local sheriff. Participants must be at least 21 years of age in order to apply for the permit. Please bring your own handgun, 30 rounds of ammunition, and protective and ear wear to the outdoor range qualification shoot immediately following the classroom training. Your fee includes range fees, one-on-one coaching, information packet, certificate of completion, quick reference wallet card, and a target. Guns are available to rent for an additional $30 fee. Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AEDAdult EnrichmentInstructor: Mary Johnson Heartsaver courses are intended for individuals who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements. This includes teachers, fitness trainers, corporate workers, restaurant employees, coaches, parents, and anyone who wants to learn how to do CPR and give first aid. The Heartsaver CPR AED course is hands-on and covers adult, child, and infant CPR, and use of the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Included in the course is relief of choking. Heartsaver First Aid provides first responders with training in basic first aid procedures, including the first aid skills recommended by OSHA. This course covers first aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, and environmental emergencies and is for non-healthcare professionals. This class will include adult, child and infant CPR/AED plus first aid. (This class does not meet the DHS requirement for center based child care providers. )Fall 2024

Combining classroom and hands-on skill components, child care providers and parents learn critical first aid skills, ranging from how to create a safe environment to prevent injuries to lifesaving CPR. Course content also includes illnesses and injuries, bleeding and bandaging, allergic reactions, how to use an epinephrine pen, asthma, bites and stings, and burns.
